Summary
The Wizard of Oz on the SNES is a side‑scrolling platform adventure that rewards curiosity. Four distinct worlds host a total of 31 levels, each packed with hidden warp zones, secret passages and puzzle rooms that push you to backtrack and experiment.
You can hop between Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion at any time, and each brings a unique attack and movement quirk – Dorothy’s wand‑powered kicks, the Scarecrow’s pitchfork‑scare, the Tin Man’s ax chop and the Lion’s claw‑climb. Switching on the fly lets you combine their abilities to cross mud, climb branches or float on “flying slippers.”
Collecting bricks lets you build bridges, while tickets hidden in each country unlock the Emerald City’s gates. Special mini‑games let you control Toto, solving “Scrambled Concentration” matches or dice‑based “Lemon Drop” challenges for extra jewels and power‑ups.
Every cleared stage can be revisited, which is essential for gathering the remaining tickets and stocking up on character‑specific health items like Glinda’s bubble or the Lion’s tofu. The game’s blend of platforming, exploration and quirky puzzles makes it a memorable SNES gem.
Storyline
The Wizard of Oz for the SNES retells L. Frank Baum’s classic tale, drawing heavily from MGM’s 1939 musical. The adventure begins with Dorothy, who must locate Glinda’s magic ruby slippers while navigating hidden areas, mazes and puzzles.
As she travels through four distinct worlds—including a nod to the 1993 animated series with the quirky Time Town—she rescues the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion, who become playable characters. Each rescued companion brings a new ability that helps solve later challenges.
The journey culminates in a showdown with the Wicked Witch before the heroes finally enter the Emerald City.
