Summary
Wing Commander: The Secret Missions dropped as an official add‑on in November 1990, expanding the classic space‑combat saga with a brand‑new 16‑mission campaign. The expansion lifts the difficulty, adds four never‑seen enemy ship classes and delivers a fresh Kilrathi‑centric storyline while keeping the same cut‑scene style that fans love.
Unlike the original branching tree, the Secret Missions forces every pilot to follow the same mission order, but a failure triggers two special “retreat” scenarios that act as dead‑ends until the player recovers. Players can also import their existing Wing Commander characters, letting personal scores and rivalries carry over into the new battles.
The stand‑alone SNES cartridge packs the whole experience, and the in‑game “Mission Selector” even lets you fly any of the original forty missions in whichever sequence you prefer, giving a nostalgic sandbox alongside the tightly scripted campaign.
Storyline
In Wing Commander: The Secret Missions, the Tiger’s Claw squadron answers a desperate distress call from the Goddard colony. When the crew arrives, the settlement is a smoldering ruin and roughly 250,000 colonists have perished, pointing to a new Kilrathi weapon that can amplify gravity a hundred‑fold. Using clever tactics they capture a Kilrathi courier ship, which reveals the graviton device is mounted on a previously unseen Sivar‑class dreadnought, named after the Kilrathi war god. The Confederation labels the ship “Sivar” and plans a counter‑strike.
Bluehair leads the assault on the Sivar in the Vigrid system, managing to cripple and destroy the massive warship. With the dreadnought’s destruction, the mysterious class and its graviton armament vanish from the Kilrathi fleet, ending the immediate threat.
