Summary

Vortex dazzles with its Super FX graphics, letting the MBS mech switch between four modes – Walker, Sonic Jet, Land Burner and Hard Shell – as you chase the Aki‑Do empire. Those transformation options give each planet a distinct feel while the hardware pushes the SNES into modest 3‑D territory. A persistent rumor tied the project to a never‑released Transformers game, but programmer Michael Wong‑Powell clarified the two were unrelated. The title was even slated for an Atari Jaguar version after Argonaut signed on as a third‑party developer, though that port never surfaced. Critics responded warmly, awarding scores from the mid‑70s up to the low‑90s, praising its uniqueness and challenging gameplay.

Storyline

Vortex puts you in the cockpit of an experimental mech known as the Morphing Battle System. Your mission is to breach the Vortex and stop the Aki‑Do Forces that have seized control of the five worlds they dominate.
By navigating each world you aim to rescue the Deoberon system, whose core has been stolen by the fierce Aki‑Do. The game’s focus is on fast‑paced combat and strategic use of the mech’s morphing abilities as you fight through the enemy’s ranks. Ultimately, retrieving the core restores balance to the Deoberon system.
