Summary
Virtual Bart feels like a quirky carnival of six bite‑size challenges, each one tossed onto a spinning roulette wheel instead of a traditional hub. The randomness keeps you guessing which of the dinosaur‑rampaging Jurassic Bart or the water‑slide chaos of Mount Splashmore will pop up next, and the occasional corn‑dog or skull panel can instantly grant or steal a life.
What’s striking is how the game reuses engines from Sculptured Software’s earlier titles—NFL Quarterback Club’s engine powers the Class Picture segment, while Mode 7 tricks give the Doomsday Bart motorcycle chase a pseudo‑3D feel. Even though a stereoscopic version was once on the drawing board, budget and eye‑strain worries nixed the idea, leaving us with a solid, if uneven, SNES experience.
Critics were split: early scores hovered around the mid‑range, praising the humor and variety, but later retrospectives slammed the controls and called it the low point of Simpsons gaming. Still, the novelty of seeing Bart as a dinosaur, a pig, or a post‑apocalyptic rider makes Virtual Bart a memorable, if imperfect, slice of ’90s nostalgia.
Storyline
In the SNES game Virtual Bart, a science fair sees Martin Prince unveiling a virtual‑reality device that showcases six educational exhibitions. Bart’s meddling causes the machine to malfunction, trapping him inside. To escape, he must complete all six programs. If he succeeds, he breaks free and Homer later steps into the device. A Game Over releases Bart, but he emerges looking ill.
The six programs are wildly themed. One sends Bart back to the Jurassic era as Dino Bart, letting him stomp through stone‑age mayhem. Another pits him against Nelson and the gang in a post‑apocalyptic Springfield as Doomsday Bart. He can also deploy a diaper‑chute as Baby Bart, star as Pork Factory Pig Bart, or ride a butt‑squeaking thrill‑ride down Mt. Splashmore.
