Summary
Urban Strike drops you back into EA’s helicopter‑action saga, this time criss‑crossing the United States from Hawaiian beaches to the neon lights of Las Vegas. The game keeps the familiar top‑down shoot‑‘em‑up feel of Desert and Jungle Strike, but adds a heavier Blackhawke chopper for early rescue runs and even a steal‑able Ground Assault Vehicle for a brief tank‑like segment. The real surprise is the on‑foot sections: after landing, you hop out with a rifle and a missile launcher to clear indoor corridors and free hostages, a first for the series.
Resource juggling is front and centre. The sleek Mohican helicopter packs machine guns, Hydra rockets and Hellfire missiles, but each weapon trades firepower for limited ammo, forcing you to pick the right loadout for each mission. Armor, fuel and ammo are all finite, replenished by crates, fuel barrels or by airlifting rescued allies to a landing zone, so a careless hit can end the run.
Critics noted that the SNES port looks brighter than its Genesis counterpart, though the controls feel a bit clunkier and the animation less fluid. Still, the core formula shines through, earning a modest three‑star rating and satisfying anyone craving more of the same high‑octane helicopter action.
Storyline
Urban Strike is set in 2006 during the Black Pearl releases, focusing on media mogul H. R. Malone, a former presidential candidate whose moralistic agenda masks a plan to destabilize the U.S. government. Malone’s scheme is uncovered by Agent Ego, a former co‑pilot from Jungle Strike who works for the secret Strike C.O.R.E. organization. Ego learns Malone is assembling a superweapon, with key components hidden in Hawaii, but Malone discovers the spy and kills him with a car bomb, prompting the player to take the loss personally. The first mission in Hawaii sees the player thwart Malone’s theft of giant mirrors and rescue a plastic surgeon targeted by assassins. The surgeon reveals he once operated on a severely burned man in Washington, later identified as Malone, and that he was marked because he realized the patient was Carlos Ortega, a major villain from Jungle Strike. Subsequent missions take the player through Mexico and San Francisco before Malone completes the superweapon and fires it on New York City, then twice more, allowing Strike C.O.R.E. to trace the weapon to a Las Vegas‑area facility. After infiltrating the base and capturing Malone, he straps a time‑bomb to his chest; the player drops him onto his own weapon as it detonates, destroying both the madman and the device.
