Summary

Ultraman: Towards the Future (often just called Ultraman on the SNES) feels like a love‑letter to the tokusatsu series that never quite lands. The game pits the chrome‑capped hero against a roster of oddball foes – Degola, Gudis and even a giant mosquito named Majaba – each confined to three‑minute bouts that feel more like a timed endurance test than a fluid brawl. The graphics, while faithful to the TV show’s neon‑bright aesthetic, come across as flat and choppy, making the action look as stiff as a mannequin on a set. That stiffness is reflected in the difficulty curve; enemies hit hard, patterns repeat, and a single misstep can send you back to the start of a round. Critics weren’t kind, with Mean Machines giving it a respectable 77% but Entertainment Weekly slashing it to a C‑, noting the game’s lack of polish and its almost parody‑like rigidity. In short, the title is a nostalgic curiosity that rewards patience more than skill.

Storyline

Ultraman - Towards the Future (often referred to simply as Ultraman Great) follows the intergalactic champion Ultraman as he confronts the deadly Gudis virus. For eons the hero has battled Gudis, a malicious pathogen that seeks to erase all competing life, and the virus finally reaches Earth, spawning a terrifying horde of giant mutant monsters.

The polluted atmosphere of our planet weakens Ultraman, forcing him to bond with a human host. Jack Shindo, equipped with the Delta Plasma Pendant, can transfer his own molecules into Ultraman’s, allowing the hero to materialize in human form. This fusion lets Jack become Ultraman Great and take the fight directly to Gudis’s creations.

Armed with the power of the pendant, Jack must battle the mutant beasts across a devastated Earth, striving to stop Gudis from wiping out every organism. The game’s storyline pits the ultimate protector against an alien virus that threatens the very fabric of life on the planet.
