Summary
Turbo Toons drops you into a top‑down footrace where six classic Hanna‑Barbera faces—Huckleberry Hound, Quick Draw McGraw, Top Cat, Snagglepuss, Hong Kong Phooey, and Yogi Bear—jostle for first place on single‑screen tracks. Scattered crystals act as power‑ups, granting temporary boosts to speed, grip or acceleration, while a mischievous “virus” crystal summons a rain cloud to sabotage rivals.
The game shines in its chaotic multiplayer: up to five friends can plug in via the Super Multitap and battle for 50 crystals in a dedicated mode, or simply race together in the standard league. Jumping on opponents can stun them, and each course throws unique obstacles—water hazards and cameo cartoon characters—into the mix, keeping every lap unpredictable.
Behind the scenes, artist Graham Rice and programmer Adrian Barritt built Turbo Toons in just six months, borrowing the bird’s‑eye view of Super Sprint but adding character‑specific interactions. Working closely with Hanna‑Barbera proved a headache, as the studio demanded perfect visual copies of its icons, a constraint that shaped the final art.
Although a North American SNES launch and a Mega Drive port were announced, they never materialized. Critics were split: the simultaneous multiplayer earned praise, yet the graphics, sound and track design drew heavy criticism, leaving Turbo Toons as a quirky, multiplayer‑focused footnote in ’90s console racing.
