Summary

Top Gear 2 (known as Top Racer 2 in Japan) expands the arcade‑style feel of its predecessor while slipping in a few realistic touches. The game throws you into 64 tracks spread across 16 countries, each block of four races acting like a mini‑championship where you must finish in the top ten to move on. A handy map shows the course layout, the leader’s position, and your own car, while a damage diagram on the left reminds you to keep the armor intact—lose a section and a spin‑out is almost guaranteed.

Weather isn’t just eye candy; wet conditions force a tyre swap and affect handling, and the lack of pit stops makes fuel economy a real concern. Upgrading becomes essential: you can boost engine acceleration, fine‑tune nitro power, improve gearbox speed and fuel efficiency, reinforce armor, and even change the paint job. Each race starts you off with six nitro boosts, and scattered pickups—cash symbols, extra nitro, or instant‑activate nitro—add a layer of strategy.

The control scheme is flexible, offering both automatic and manual gearshifts that you can configure before the race. Money earned from the top‑six finishers (10‑6‑4‑3‑2‑1 points) feeds directly into the upgrade shop, where buying the best parts early pays off in later, longer circuits. Passwords after each country let you pick up where you left off, and even the Giza Necropolis was renamed to sidestep naming rights.

Critics gave it solid marks: Nintendo Power scored it 3.55/5, Super Gamer 83%, and IGN later placed Top Gear 2 at #95 on its Top 100 SNES Games list, noting its deeper graphics and richer gameplay compared to the original.
