Summary

Tin Star is an SNES rail shooter where anthropomorphic robots face off in a wild‑west setting. It’s unique because you can aim with the regular controller, the Super Scope, or the SNES Mouse, making it the first SNES title compatible with every input device. Each day of a week is split into target practice, an action stage, and a fast‑draw duel against the Bad Oil Gang, eventually offering 31 levels that flip between side‑scrolling rides, stampedes, towns and first‑person saloons, jails and banks. Money collected by blasting enemies funds your saves and influences the final outcome; hit a canteen to restore health, but doing so disables the optional bonus round where you shoot stars orbiting a lady on a spinning disk. The concept grew from Richard Kay’s robotic Western vision, a nod to Westworld, and the visuals were crafted by animator Scott Pleydell‑Pearce and background artist Deborah Graham, with gameplay design by Marcus Lindblom.

Storyline

Tin Star, the six‑gun‑armed sheriff of East Driftwood, arrives with his sidekick Mo Crash and his horse Aluminum to confront the Bad Oil Gang, a criminal crew led by Black Bart. The gang includes the four Johnson brothers—Tiny, Bugsy, Lucky and the Kid—and the two Oil brothers, Snake and Crude, each with distinct strengths and flaws. Almost immediately the town is besieged: a saloon shootout, a cattle stampede, and a series of train robberies threaten its newly built railroad. Tin Star repeatedly arrests members, but the gang repeatedly escapes, even disguising themselves as women to exploit the “Good Guy Code of the West,” which forbids lawmen from shooting unarmed females and children.
After a false accusation that Tin Star shot the Kid Johnson, his badge is revoked and Black Bart temporarily replaces him. Mo is kidnapped, and Tin Star returns in a mask, rescues Mo, thwarts a bank robbery, defeats Black Bart in two quick‑draw duels, and destroys the gang’s headquarters. He regains his sheriff position, and the ending varies with his earnings: below $750 K, Maria refuses to marry him; between $750 K and $999 K, she marries Mo; above $1 M, Maria is revealed to be Black Bart in disguise.
