Summary

Tenchi Souzou, known abroad as Terranigma, is the third chapter of Quintet’s unofficial action‑RPG trilogy that began with Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia. The game sticks to a top‑down view while delivering a real‑time combat system where running, jumping, and attacking can be blended into distinct techniques—each suited to different enemy types, though the damage variance is subtle. A guard move lets you deflect incoming projectiles, a handy trick since melee attacks can’t be blocked. Defeating foes yields experience points that raise your level, health, strength, defense, and luck, and occasionally drops gems that can be spent on weapons, armor, healing items, and one‑time‑use spell items. Spells are crafted by trading Magirocks at a magic shop for rings or medals; once cast, they revert to Magirocks, ready to be exchanged again, and new spell types unlock after boss battles and side tasks.

Storyline

Tenchi Souzou tells the tale of a boy named Ark who is tasked with resurrecting a dead Earth. The planet is depicted as a hollow sphere with an external Lightside representing growth and an internal Darkside symbolising decline, later personified as God and Devil. After a primordial clash between these forces left the world lifeless, Ark’s curiosity sets the restoration in motion.
In the opening chapter, "The Outset," Ark lives in Crysta, the sole village in the underworld. He opens a forbidden door, touches a mysterious box containing the friendly demon Yomi, and the entire village is frozen except for the Elder. Guided by the Elder, Ark must free the five towers—each standing for a continent—to revive the surface continents and lift the curse.
The second chapter, "Resurrection of the World," finds Ark on the barren Lightside where he frees the giant tree Ra from a parasite, sparking the return of plants, birds, wind, animals, and eventually humanity. "Resurrection of the Genius" sees him expand cities, meet a Lightside twin of his friend Elle, and awaken the scientist Beruga, who reveals a dark plan involving a virus called Asmodeus and the Devil Dark Gaia. After a dream‑vision from the Elder, Ark is sent to collect five Starstones and place them at the South‑Pole grave, summoning his Lightside self who kills him.
In the final chapter, "Resurrection of the Hero," Ark is reborn as a baby through Light Gaia’s soul, only to be rescued by Darkside Elle after Yomi’s betrayal. Elle sacrifices herself to stop Yomi, allowing Ark to defeat Beruga and then Dark Gaia, which destroys the Darkside. The ending shows Ark’s village fading with the Devil’s demise, a hint of reincarnation, and a final dream of Ark as a bird watching the world he helped create.
