Summary
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Mutant Warriors packs a surprisingly deep fighting system for a SNES beat‑’em‑up, using a four‑button layout of weak/strong punches and kicks. When you fill the green bar beneath the life gauge by landing hits, you can unleash a super special attack by pressing both strong buttons together, turning a regular brawl into a cinematic moment. A speed‑boost toggle lets you crank the pace up, making combos flash faster while demanding sharper reflexes.
Beyond the main story and versus modes, there’s a watch mode where the AI runs the match for you, and a roster of ten playable fighters – the four turtles, Shredder (dubbed Cyber Shredder), War, Aska, Wingnut, Chrome Dome, and Armaggon – plus the Rat King and Karai as boss characters.
The Japanese SNES release, also titled Mutant Warriors, swaps a few visual cues: Aska’s outfit is more revealing, victory animations differ, the turtles’ voice tones are altered, and each character gets a distinct icon. These tweaks give the Japanese version a subtly different flavor without changing the core gameplay.
In the Cowabunga Collection, the SNES edition gets six quality‑of‑life upgrades: you can now play as the bosses, access extra versus stages, enable a maximum‑speed setting, carry up to ten extra lives in Story Mode, perform ultimate attacks, and unlock a hidden Group Mode that only appears in the Japanese build.
Storyline
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Mutant Warriors drops players into a nationwide fighting tournament where dozens of combatants have signed up, including the Turtles’ arch‑nemesis Shredder. Determined to stop him and prove their own skill, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael enter the competition as a team. The tournament serves as the backdrop for the game’s story mode, setting up a series of battles across the United States.
While battling through the bracket, the heroes learn that April O’Neil and Master Splinter have been captured by Karai. The turtles hop into their signature Turtle Blimp, fly from city to city, defeat rival fighters and gather clues that lead them closer to their friends. Each victory brings them one step nearer to rescuing April and Splinter and putting an end to Karai’s plot.
