Summary
Super Adventure Island brings the classic Adventure Island feel to the SNES with a splash of 16‑bit polish. The game swaps the familiar dinosaur sidekicks for a choice between a stone axe and a boomerang, and after collecting the same weapon four times the projectiles turn into fireballs that can even smash stone blocks. You can fire the boomerang in four directions, crouch for a super‑jump, and hop on a skateboard for a speed boost, while tropical fruit keeps Higgins’ life bar from draining.
Visually the stages are brighter and the soundtrack, composed by Yuzo Koshiro, adds a memorable retro vibe, though the control layout—shoot and jump swapped—can feel clunky at first. Critics praised the graphics but noted Higgins’ slower pace and limited jumping, and the title sold about 128,000 copies in Japan. Despite the mixed reception, it earned a spot on Complex’s 2018 list of the best SNES games and even showed up in the early‑90s manga Cyber Boy.
Storyline
In Takahashi Meijin no Daibouken Shima (known abroad as Adventure Island), the tranquil island home of Master Higgins is threatened despite his many heroic deeds. Over time Higgins has won the love and support of the local Miss Jungle, the lovely Tina. One night, while the couple is stargazing atop a treetop, Tina’s warm touch suddenly turns icy as the evil sorcerer Dark Cloak casts a spell that turns her into a stone statue. Dark Cloak then retreats to the legendary Ice Mountain across the sea. Determined, Higgins resolves to defeat the wicked sorcerer and restore Tina to life.
