Summary
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (often just called Tactics Ogre) swaps the realâtime chaos of its predecessor for a chessâlike, turnâbased system that forces you to think about positioning on a diagonalâview grid. Each unitâs Wait Turn points, weight and agility dictate when they act, while class evolution lets you grow a humble footâsoldier into a spellâcasting powerhouse.
The game bears the unmistakable stamp of Yasumi Matsuno, who wore the hats of director, writer and lead designer, while Hiroshi Minagawa handled art direction and Akihiko Yoshida crafted the realistic character portraits despite the Super Famicomâs color limits. A prototype inspired by the 1990 title Solstice gave the quarterâview perspective, and a custom âHermitâ engine squeezed largeâscale 3Dâstyle maps into the consoleâs tiny memory.
Hitoshi Sakimoto and Masaharu Iwata provided a darker, orchestralâsynth soundtrack that they both consider a career highlight, contrasting sharply with the lighter tones of the original Ogre Battle.
Even though the Super Famicom version never left Japan, it sold half a million copies, earned a Famitsu Gold Award, and later won Best Import Strategy Game of 1995. A fanâmade English patch finally let Western players experience its eight possible endings, cementing its reputation as a genreâdefining classic.
Storyline
Tactics Ogre - Let Us Cling Together takes place in the shattered archipelago of Valeria, a kingdom once ruled by King Dolgare and devoted to six elemental gods, the Light Goddess Ishtar, and the Chaos God Asmodeus. After Dolgareâs apparent death, three ethnic factions vie for power: BacrumâValeria backed by Lodis and led by Bishop Branta Mown, the Galgastan Kingdom under Cardinal Barbatos, and the Walsta People commanded by Duke Ronway. The civil war leaves the Walsta confined to a tiny island and fuels a brutal ethnic conflict that drives the entire narrative.
The story opens with Walsta resistance members Denim Powell, his sister Kachua, and their friend Vice Bozek ambushing Zenobian mercenaries, mistakenly believing their leader Lans Hamilton to be the feared Black Knight Lans Tartare. Hamilton, moved by their cause, joins them along with the sage Warren, while Kachua tries in vain to dissuade Denim from further bloodshed. Ronway orders a massacre of a nonâcompliant town, framing Galgastan; Denim must choose whether to obey, rebel, or walk his own path, a decision that splits Viceâs fate.
Later, a dying Plancy reveals Denimâs hidden Mown lineage and that Kachua is the illegitimate daughter of Dolgare, giving her a claim to the throne. The revelations strain Denim and Kachuaâs bond, leading her briefly to side with Tartare before a suicide option appears. The war culminates with Galgastanâs fall, Barbatosâs death, Ronwayâs assassination, and a final clash against Tartareâs Dark Knights who unleash a portal to Asmodeusâs realm. Warren sacrifices himself to seal the portal, and Dolgare, transformed into an Ogre by a pact with Asmodeus, is finally defeated.
Depending on the playerâs choices, either Kachua is crowned queen and unites Valeria in peace, or Denim becomes king only to face assassination or Lodis conquest. Viceâs fate variesâsurviving as Kachuaâs ally, dying after killing Ronway, or being executed by BacrumâValeriaâwhile Hamilton returns to Zenobia with the stolen sword Brunhild, and Tartare escapes back to Lodis. The gameâs darkâfantasy political drama was inspired by realâworld conflicts and deliberately avoids a single âcorrectâ ending, presenting multiple coexisting timelines.
