Summary
T2: The Arcade Game brings the Terminator 2 rail‑shooter straight to the SNES, letting one or two players step into the shoes of a T‑800 tasked with shielding John and Sarah Connor. The action unfolds in a first‑person view across seven set‑pieces that swing from the bleak 2029 war zones to the gritty 1990s streets, and each level rewards you for the number of Terminators you vaporize while penalising any civilian casualties.
Your primary weapon is an endless‑ammo machine gun that overheats: the longer you hold the trigger, the slower the fire rate becomes, and a power gauge refills only when you pause. A side button unleashes a limited‑stock secondary arm – missiles in the future scenes, shotgun shells in the past – and scattered power‑ups replenish both ammo and coolant. Scoring bonuses accrue at the end of every stage except the sixth, and a hefty health loss forces you to restart if John falls.
The SNES version mirrors the arcade’s digitized graphics and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s iconic voice clips, even using close‑up stills of Robert Patrick for the T‑1000 showdown. You can aim with the standard pad, the Super Scope, or the SNES Mouse, giving the experience a surprisingly flexible feel for a 1990s console shooter.
Storyline
T2 – The Arcade Game follows the plot of Terminator 2: Judgment Day. You play as a captured T‑800 that the human resistance has reprogrammed, fighting Skynet’s forces in 2029. After breaching the super‑computer’s headquarters and destroying its CPU, the T‑800 is sent back in time to protect young John Connor from the relentless T‑1000.
The first four stages serve as a prelude, pitting you against waves of metal Terminators on a post‑apocalyptic battlefield, a besieged human hideout, and the security checkpoints of SkyNet’s supercomputer. Once the CPU is destroyed, the game jumps to the past where you must raid Cyberdyne Systems, wiping out all research while fending off the T‑1000, which pursues you in a police helicopter and a liquid‑nitrogen truck. The T‑800 can freeze the liquid‑nitrogen‑coated T‑1000, shatter it, but it quickly reforms, leading to a final showdown in a steel mill where the T‑800 blasts the T‑1000 into molten steel.
Two endings are possible. If the Cyberdyne raid destroys all equipment, a message confirms that Judgment Day has been averted. If any research survives, the threat remains and Judgment Day is still possible.
