Summary
The SNES version of Syndicate swaps the original’s gritty realism for a surprisingly cartoony art style, but it keeps the angled, top‑down isometric view that feels a lot like a real‑time X‑Com. The screen is filled with bustling city blocks where you command a squad of up to four cyber‑enhanced agents, issuing orders on the fly as they blast through police, rival operatives, and any civilian that gets in the way. What sets this port apart are the brand‑new levels and a control scheme tuned for the Super Nintendo controller, which makes the frantic firefights feel tighter. Between missions you juggle taxes from conquered districts, fund research, and outfit your agents with everything from pistols to Gauss guns and brain‑washing Persuadertrons. The constant pressure of keeping territories happy – or else facing a revolt – adds a strategic layer that makes each mission feel like part of a larger corporate war.
Storyline
The backstory of Syndicate, as explained in the manual, places the year 2096 in a cyber‑punk world where a handful of global megacorporations have supplanted governments. EuroCorp created the CHIP, a neck‑implanted device that dulls a person’s perception of misery and makes them vulnerable to corporate suggestion, turning these corporations into ruthless crime syndicates.
You assume the role of a marketing director‑turned‑hit‑man for your own syndicate, commanding up to four cyborg agents. These agents were once ordinary civilians, captured, cybernetically enhanced and reprogrammed, and they carry out assassinations, infiltrations, thefts and "persuasion" missions using a Persuadertron.
New recruits can be persuaded and added to replace injured or dead operatives, but losing every agent triggers a game‑over as your airship self‑destructs. The gameplay revolves around expanding territorial control, managing the money earned, and crushing rival syndicates.
Rivals such as The Tao, Sphinx Inc. and The Castrilos are eliminated one by one, culminating in a final showdown at the Atlantic Accelerator research station. Victory there declares the dawn of a new empire across the Earth.
