Summary

Super Valis IV, the SNES spin on the Valis saga, feels like a stripped‑down remix of its CD‑ROM predecessor. The game swaps the original magic system for a collection of special items and weapons, turning spell‑casting into a scavenger hunt that rewards careful exploration. While the roster shrinks—Amu and Asfal disappear, leaving only Lena as the default hero (Yuko can be unlocked with a cheat)—the platforming core stays solid, with melee combat and boss encounters at the end of each stage.

Visually, the title shines thanks to colorful, imaginative backgrounds and high‑quality animated cut‑scenes that echo the series’ anime roots, even though some of the original’s cinematic sequences were cut. Critics praised this visual flair but were less kind to the soundtrack, noting the SNES sound chip’s limitations, and to the overall low difficulty and sparse enemy design, which made early levels feel sluggish.

The game’s legacy has been surprisingly resilient: after its 1993 North American launch, it resurfaced on Nintendo’s Classics service in 2020 and landed in the 2023 Valis: The Fantasm Soldier Collection III for Switch, giving a new generation a chance to experience its mixed‑bag charm.

Storyline

Super Valis IV continues the saga after Valis III. Yuko has ascended to become the goddess of Vecanti, keeping peace since Glames was defeated. The Dark World prince Galgear seeks a magical ring that would boost his power, but the gods imprison him in a crystal sunk beneath the ocean. Fifteen years later he shatters his prison, kidnaps former heroine Valna and draws the pursuit of Cham’s troops.

Lena, a member of Cham’s band, asks to infiltrate Galgear’s stronghold and free Valna; after a disembodied voice sways Cham, Lena and her twin sister Amu enter the inner sanctum. They are halted by Galgear and his ring, but Asfal, the prince’s father, teleports them away and reveals that only the Valis sword—now absent from this world—can stop the tyrant.

Guided by Yuko’s blessing, the sisters climb to the heavens of Vecanti, retrieve the mystic blade and return to defeat Galgear, restoring balance to the realm.
