Super Star Wars drops you into the galaxy‑wide clash of the original film, letting you hop between Luke, Han or Chewbacca, each with a unique feel in the side‑scrolling run‑and‑gun action. Aside from blasting through Tatooine dunes and Mos‑Eisley alleys, the game thrusts you into a 3‑D‑look landspeeder chase and an X‑Wing trench run that culminates in a showdown with Darth Vader’s TIE Advanced. Collecting upgrades expands the standard blaster, and Luke can even wield a lightsaber after Obi‑Wan’s lesson.
All of the film’s iconic themes make the SNES soundscape, arranged by Paul Webb who translated John Williams’ score onto the console’s 8‑channel chip using Ensoniq EPS samples. Jon Knoles designed the character sprites while Harrison Fong supplied the dusty‑planet backgrounds, giving the action a cinematic polish that still feels retro‑game charming.

Storyline

Super Star Wars follows the basic plot of the original film, but the story is trimmed and tweaked to fit an action‑game format. For example, instead of simply buying C‑3PO and R2‑D2 from the Jawas, Luke Skywalker must battle his way up a Jawa sandcrawler, leaping across moving conveyor belts. Brief cutscenes between levels give an abbreviated version of the movie’s events, and later stages let you take control of smuggler Han Solo or his co‑pilot Chewbacca. The game also includes vehicle sections where you pilot an X‑Wing or a landspeeder. The finale reenacts Luke’s Death Star trench run, ending with Darth Vader confronting the player in his TIE Advanced x1.
