Summary
The ice‑clad battlefields of Hoth feel fresh in Super Empire Strikes Back, where the pace of the original is cranked up with slick Mode 7 vehicle chases and a new double‑jump that lets you zip over probe droids and towering walkers. Luke, Han and Chewie each sport a primary and secondary weapon—Luke can block blaster fire with his saber, Han tosses grenades, and Chewie unleashes a whirling melee attack—while later levels let Luke snag Force Powers after his Dagobah swamp mission. A cut “asteroid chase” stage shows how cartridge space forced tough decisions, and a quirky EGM contest placed a fan’s likeness, Jeff Crosno, on a Rebel soldier in an Ice Fields cut‑scene.
The game resurfaced on Wii’s Virtual Console in 2009 and saw a THQ re‑issue in 1997 to ride the “Special Edition” wave, keeping its pixel‑perfect action alive. Critics adored it—AllGame gave 4.5/5, IGN 7.5/10, and it topped UK SNES sales in February 1994, later earning spots on numerous “best‑of” lists, including IGN’s Top 100 SNES Games and Complex’s 20‑best Super Nintendo titles.
