Summary

Super Shadow of the Beast was imagined as an upgraded SNES version of Psygnosis’ avant‑garde Amiga title. The development team planned to push the console’s Mode 7 and sound chip to give the game richer parallax scrolling and an orchestral soundtrack that the original could only hint at. At the 1992 Summer Consumer Electronics Show the demo was displayed, generating buzz about the beast‑laden side‑scroller on Nintendo hardware.

The release was supposed to come through Information Global Service, but the project stalled and the cartridge never reached store shelves. Because the game never shipped, only a handful of prototypes exist, turning it into a prized footnote for collectors and a tantalizing “what‑might‑have‑been” in SNES history.

Storyline

In Super Shadow of the Beast, the hero is a boy named Aarbron who is snatched as a child and twisted by dark magic into a hulking servant of the evil beast lord Maletoth. He spends years battling the world under Maletoth’s command, his humanity buried beneath the curse. When he witnesses the execution of a man and recognizes the victim as his father, his lost memories surge back. The revelation fuels a desperate quest for vengeance against the monstrous ruler.
Aarbron’s journey leads him across harsh landscapes and through relentless forces loyal to Maletoth. The climax pits him against a colossal minion whose only visible limbs are a massive hand and foot. After a fierce fight, he shatters the creature, breaking the Shadow of the Beast’s hold on him. Freed, he regains a more human shape and stands ready to confront his dark master.
