Summary
Super Play Action Football carries the classic three‑quarters view of its NES predecessor into the 16‑bit era, letting you pick from high school, college, or pro play. The pro mode features all 28 NFL franchises, though the lack of NFLPA and NCAA licenses means you’ll see generic player names and no real school mascots. College mode adds a weekly poll, conference schedules and bowl games, while the NFL season includes both the regular schedule and the playoffs.
Gameplay leans on the old‑school “pile‑up” mechanic: if a defender lands on the ball‑carrier, the play stops and you’re set back a line. There’s even a timing trick where diving with the nose tackle right at the snap can guarantee a sack. The graphics stay true to the original’s perspective, but the roster anonymity is a noticeable trade‑off.
Before launch, Popular Mechanics hinted it would draw sports fans, but the reception turned sour—Total!! UK gave it a 53% score and the Video Game Critic slapped an F on it, citing clunky controls and lackluster depth.
