Summary
Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's Super Off Road started as a 1989 arcade hit from Leland Corporation, where John Morgan not only programmed the game but also introduced the now‑standard upgrade mechanic—players earn cash from races to boost their trucks or buy nitro. The SNES port expands the action to sixteen tracks and loops through sixty‑four races, all while flaunting the Toyota logo and swapping Stewart’s name for a tribute to Mickey Thompson. Up to four friends can compete simultaneously, navigating mud pits, jumps and spin‑outs on a variety of indoor off‑road courses. Though the arcade allowed extra cash on continues, the home versions reset your bankroll to zero after each restart, raising the stakes. The title earned mixed reviews—around 64% on GameRankings and mid‑range scores from Electronic Gaming Monthly—and even spawned a sequel, Super Off Road: The Baja, which switched to a third‑person view for the SNES.
