Summary

Super Mario Bros. CD (often shortened to SMBCD) is a fan‑made rom hack that reimagines the classic SMB experience as if it had launched on a CD‑based console. The imagined platform is the FamicomCD, a fictional add‑on for the original Famicom/NES, not the later Super NES CD that sometimes gets confused with it. By running on the MSU‑1 chip, SMBCD delivers crystal‑clear, CD‑quality music that was composed exclusively for the hack, and it even includes fully animated cutscenes that feel right at home on a disc‑based system. Visually, the hack leans heavily on the SNES’s Mode 0 background system, stacking up to four layers for richer foregrounds and parallax scrolling, while keeping each tile limited to 2 BPP (four colors) and preserving the full 16‑color palette for sprites. The result is a nostalgic yet surprisingly deep reinterpretation of Super Mario World, packed with audio and visual flourishes that only a CD‑centric fantasy could inspire.

Storyline

Super Mario Bros. CD (often just called Mario CD) drops Mario and Luigi onto the tiny yet varied Archipelago of Brixurei. The island’s protector, the Guardian of Brixurei, has gone mad, unleashing strange weather and agitated wildlife that threaten the locals. Anyone who tried to investigate the Guardian’s behavior vanished without a trace, leaving the townsfolk desperate for help. In response, the Mushroom Kingdom bids farewell as the brothers set sail toward the troubled archipelago.
During the voyage, Mario and Luigi are joined by a new friendly face who promises to aid them on their quest. Together they must uncover the cause of the Guardian’s frenzy and restore balance to Brixurei’s chaotic environment.
