Summary
Super Godzilla turns the SNES into a kaiju‑filled playground by splitting the screen into a top action view and a bottom overworld map. I steer Godzilla with the D‑pad, using the map to locate buildings, civilians and power‑ups that must be destroyed or collected while keeping an eye on a shrinking energy bar and a ticking clock.
When the map pinpoints a rival monster, the game flips to a side‑scrolling showdown where punches, tail whips and Godzilla’s iconic fire breath drain the enemy’s power. A hidden Fighting Spirit meter acts like a morality gauge: hitting the right attacks at the right moment fuels the meter, while missed or poorly timed moves lower it and leave Godzilla vulnerable.
Hidden capsules upgrade the lizard into Super Godzilla, a prerequisite for battling gargantuan foes such as Mecha‑King Ghidorah and the ancient Bagan. The transformation adds extra fire‑breath power for the climactic duels.
Critics were split: some praised the game’s faithful movie sound‑effects and visuals, but many slammed the slow, map‑centric exploration and largely uninteractive cinematic battles, concluding that the title mostly satisfies die‑hard Godzilla enthusiasts.
Storyline
When King Ghidorah suddenly attacks Osaka, the military deploys the Super X II and uses a transmitter to herd the dinosaur toward the city. Godzilla arrives, slays the three‑headed beast, and the creature’s body vanishes as an alien ship appears, demanding humanity’s surrender. The invaders reveal they were controlling Ghidorah and soon unleash Mechagodzilla wearing an artificial skin at Mt. Fuji. While the two titans clash, the aliens kidnap Dr. Shiragami and take him to Lake Ashino.
Godzilla rescues the professor but must first battle Biollante, a plant‑based clone created from Shiragami’s stolen DNA. After defeating Biollante, Shiragami injects Godzilla with a serum that boosts his strength. The aliens then release Battra in Yokohama, where it lays a dangerous egg. Godzilla destroys both Battra and the egg before it hatches.
Reanimated as Mecha‑King Ghidorah, the monster attacks Yokohama while aliens hide serum‑filled capsules around the city. Collecting them all triggers Godzilla’s transformation into Super Godzilla, letting him crush the mechanical foe. The battle continues when the invaders travel to the past, awaken ancient Bagan and give him the same serum. In the ruins of Yokohama, Godzilla finally overpowers Bagan, the aliens retreat, and Super XII disables transmitter, freeing Godzilla to return to the ocean.
