Summary

Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts feels like a love‑letter to classic SNES platformers, trading the frantic run‑and‑gun of its predecessors for tighter, more deliberate jumps. The knight starts in a shiny steel armor that drops to his underpants after a single hit, and the addition of a double‑jump lets you correct mid‑air direction without worrying about momentum. Each of the eight "Quests" is timed, pushing you to clear hordes of ghouls before confronting a Foul Guardian that guards the next gate.

Weapon variety is surprisingly deep for a 16‑bit title: you can swap a fast knife, hatchet, crossbow, dagger or short‑range torch, but only one can be held at a time. Bronze armor upgrades the weapon you’re using into a flaming or lightning‑charged version, while the gold set adds a Moon Shield that blocks a projectile when you stand still and a screen‑wide magic attack that must be charged. Hidden chests pepper the levels, sometimes rewarding you with these upgrades, other times springing deadly traps or turning you into a baby, a girl, a seal, or even a wasp for a brief, frustrating moment.

Four difficulty settings and a maximum of nine lives keep the challenge adjustable, though the game limits you to six continues, making each death feel weighty. Environmental hazards—earthquakes that lift the ground, blizzards, crashing waves, and avalanches—add a layer of platforming danger beyond the usual enemy patterns.

Regional quirks are worth noting: the crosses were changed to ankhs outside Japan, the final boss’s name switched from Samael to Sardius, and the European version trimmed some enemies and obstacles to ease the difficulty and reduce slowdown.

The title has resurfaced many times, from Capcom’s PlayStation compilations to Virtual Console releases on Wii, Wii U, and 3DS, and it even landed on the Super NES Classic Edition in 2017. By mid‑2017 it had sold over a million copies on the SNES, cementing its place as one of Capcom’s enduring classics.

Storyline

Super Ghouls'n Ghosts on the SNES follows the dauntless knight Arthur as he battles a spell‑bound kingdom overrun by undead. Emperor Sardius has revived the Ghoul Realm, kidnapped Princess Guinevere (also referred to as Prin Prin) and trapped her in the Phantom Zone. Arthur must slash through hordes of ghouls to rescue her and confront the emperor.

After defeating the final Foul Guardian in the first playthrough, Guinevere reveals that Sardius holds a mysterious weapon – the Goddess’s Bracelet – which she once wore. The bracelet is required to defeat Sardius, so Arthur must embark on a second playthrough to locate it and finally end the emperor’s reign.
