Summary

Super Bomberman 2 (often just called Super Bomberman) stands out in the SNES lineup as the lone entry without a two‑player story mode—an idea that was cut during development but left the single‑player maze action intact. The game’s real star is its multiplayer, offering up to four friends (via multitap) to clash in ten specially‑designed arenas, with options ranging from free‑for‑all to team battles and the quirky G‑Bomber mode, where the winner spins a wheel for a starter power‑up. Critics raved about its tight controls, vibrant graphics, and catchy tunes, with scores climbing into the 90s from magazines like Computer and Video Games and Official Nintendo Magazine. The buzz translated into strong sales in Japan—over 730 000 copies lifetime—and earned it spots on numerous “best of” lists, including a three‑star placement in Next Generation’s Top 50 Games of All Time and a top‑100 slot on IGN’s SNES countdown. Even years later, it resurfaced in the 2026 Super Bomberman Collection, confirming its lasting appeal as the definitive party bomb‑dropping experience.

Storyline

Super Bomberman 2 drops you into a sci‑fi crisis where five evil cyborgs—the Five Dastardly Bombers—have seized a space station and locked the original Bomberman in a prison cell. He awakens in the dank dungeon of Magnet Bomber and learns that the alien invaders plan to take over the universe, starting with Earth.

The game sends Bomberman through four distinct worlds, each ruled by a different bomber: the stone‑clad Golem Bomber, the flamboyant Pretty Bomber, the brainy Brain Bomber, and finally their leader, the electrified Plasma Bomber. Each stage culminates in a showdown that tests both bomb‑laying skill and strategy.

By defeating all five Dastardly Bombers, Bomberman frees himself and restores peace to Earth, putting an end to the cyborg threat once and for all.
