Summary

Super Battletank: War in the Gulf drops you straight into the cockpit of an M1 Abrams, with the screen split between a detailed instrument panel and a sweeping desert view. The panel shows everything from speed and fuel gauges to cannon elevation, while the outside window lets you track enemy vehicles across a barren battlefield.

The control scheme is surprisingly deep for a SNES title: you can accelerate, brake, steer, swivel the main gun, fire, and pull up a real‑time map at any moment. Two special weapons add a tactical edge – a powerful laser shot that pierces tougher armor and a smoke screen that lets you vanish from hostile sight.

Your opponents range from low‑flying helicopter gunships to heavily armored T‑72 tanks and even Scud launchers, each requiring you to navigate the map, line up a shot, and fire until the target is destroyed. The missions span large swaths of terrain, forcing you to balance aggression with careful positioning.

Critics gave the game mixed marks – scores hovered around the mid‑50s percent range, with praise aimed at the graphics but criticism aimed at the repetitive nature of the gameplay and a perceived lack of strategic depth.

Storyline

Super Battletank – War in the Gulf, commonly referred to as Super Battletank, puts the player in the middle of Operation Desert Storm. The game’s setting follows the February 1991 U.S. deployment of troops into Kuwait to fight Iraqi forces. You control an M1 Abrams main battle tank operating for the United Nations, navigating a variety of missions across the desert. Each mission tasks you with locating and destroying marked Iraqi targets, reflecting the mobile armor role the Abrams played in the real conflict. The ultimate goal is a military victory against the enemy forces.
