Summary
Super Back to the Future II drops you onto a constantly humming hoverboard, turning every level into a high‑speed skate‑through of the film’s future cityscape. The game’s chibi art, courtesy of Endorphin Konappy, swaps the movie’s gritty realism for a super‑deformed, anime‑style look that feels oddly charming on the Super Famicom. Hitoshi Sakimoto’s orchestral soundtrack weaves familiar themes into a fresh leitmotif, giving each jump and spin a cinematic punch.
What’s quirky is that the title began life as a Zelda‑like RPG before the developers at Daft pivoted to pure platforming, a shift that still left behind hidden coin‑collecting mechanics and vending‑machine power‑ups. Marty can take three hits, bounce off enemies, and even boost his board’s speed with a dedicated button, while walls marked with special spots let you launch into the air.
Boss battles pit you against Griff and Biff Tannen, and the roster of foes ranges from police officers to quirky robots, all designed to be knocked off with a spin attack. The game launched exclusively in Japan in July 1993 under Toshiba EMI, making it a rare, region‑locked slice of retro nostalgia.
Storyline
Super Back to the Future II follows Marty McFly after his 1955 trip. He returns home, tries skateboarding with girlfriend Jennifer, but Doc Brown bursts in from the future. Doc warns that their children's future is in danger and whisks Marty, Jennifer, and himself to 2015. In the future Marty pretends to be his son Marty Jr. and confronts Biff’s grandson Griff and his gang.
After they arrest Griff and his crew, Biff steals a sports almanac, hijacks the DeLorean and goes back to 1955 to give the book to his teenage self. He then returns to 2015 with Marty, Doc and Jennifer, none the wiser. Back in 1985 they find Hill Valley turned into a crime‑ridden, polluted city where Biff is a multi‑millionaire and even Marty’s stepfather. Doc Brown has been declared insane.
Marty must now race through the altered Hill Valley, fixing events and retrieving the almanac to restore the timeline. The plot mirrors the film’s core premise of stopping Biff from getting rich with the future sports almanac. Each era—1955, 1985, and 2015—offers distinct challenges as Marty jumps between them in the iconic DeLorean. The goal is to put time back the way it was.
