Summary
Stargate (the SNES side‑scroller) drops you into the shoes of Colonel Jack O’Neill, letting you sprint, jump and climb through desert dunes, shadowy caverns and bustling nomad towns before the final showdown in Ra’s palace. A simple HUD tracks O’Neill’s energy bar, weapon status and grenade count, while the radio screen flashes mission goals, lives, continues, hieroglyphs and bomb pieces.
Your only weapon is a machine gun with infinite ammo, but scattered pickups can turn it into rapid‑fire, wide‑fire or boost its strength, and a coolant can keep it from overheating. Grenades are plentiful—up to 99 standard rounds and a few alien‑type explosives—making every encounter, from fleeting scarab beetles to hulking Horus guards, feel tactical. Two missions even let you pilot Ra’s gliders for classic dog‑fight action.
Three boss battles punctuate the trek: Anubis appears twice, and the ultimate duel with Ra caps the adventure. However, the game won’t let you celebrate victory unless you’ve gathered all seven bomb pieces and seven hieroglyphs; missing either triggers a game‑over even after defeating Ra. Reviewers praised the SNES version’s cleaner, less confusing control layout compared to its Genesis counterpart.
Storyline
The SNES game *Stargate* opens in the deserts of Abydos right after Colonel Jack O’Neill’s team steps through the ancient portal. A sandstorm separates O’Neill from his squad, and a nuclear bomb meant to seal the gate is missing while the base’s supplies lie hidden in nearby caves. O’Neill must locate the supplies, recover the bomb’s seven fragments, and gather seven Egyptian hieroglyphs needed to reactivate the Stargate.
After retrieving the caches, O’Neill reaches the village of Nagada, where four elders direct him to the catacombs where his teammates are held. He learns that Ra’s general Anubis is hunting the rebel leader Sha’uri, prompting a one‑on‑one showdown with Anubis. Once Anubis is temporarily defeated, O’Neill rescues the boy Skaara and discovers that Daniel Jackson has been captured inside Ra’s hidden spaceship.
O’Neill frees Jackson, learns of traitors within the Nagadan rebellion, and uses a downed Ra glider to strike the traitors. With the rebels healed by herbal medicine, a second battle with Anubis ends in O’Neill’s final victory. He then raids Ra’s armory, cripples the guidance systems of Ra’s glider fleet, and secures a secret route into Ra’s pyramid.
Inside the pyramid, O’Neill and Jackson sabotage the glider bay doors, preparing the Nagadans for a full assault. As Ra attempts to escape in his spaceship, O’Neill plants the nuclear bomb and escapes just before the explosion destroys the god and the portal, allowing the surviving team to return to Earth.
