Summary
Star Fox 2 finally showed up on my Switch after lingering in Nintendo’s vault for over two decades. The team pushed the aging SNES to its limit with a Super FX 2 chip, squeezing in more polygons, texture mapping, and even planar clipping to create a semi‑real‑time strategy layer—a map that scrolls while enemies and missiles race toward Corneria.
You can pick two Arwing pilots from six, including newcomers Miyu and Fay, and swap between them on the fly. If one crashes, the mission continues with the surviving pilot, adding a surprisingly tense roguelike feel. The game also introduces the hostile Star Wolf mercenaries and bipedal Walker sequences that feel more like mini‑dungeons than a pure shooter.
Originally slated for an August 1995 launch, the game was cancelled because Nintendo feared its 16‑bit graphics would look cheap beside PlayStation and Saturn titles. leaked source code kept it alive among fans, and its concepts—especially Star Wolf— resurfaced in Star Fox 64. Finally, the official English ROM landed on the Super NES Classic Edition in 2017 and later on the Switch’s Nintendo Classics service, where it earned praise for depth and strategy despite its frame‑rate quirks.
Storyline
Andross is back in Star Fox 2, this time commanding a fleet of battleships, hidden bases and two massive interplanetary ballistic missiles aimed at Corneria. General Pepper summons the Star Fox team, now equipped with custom Arwings, a Mothership and two fresh recruits – Miyu, a tomboyish lynx, and Fay, a white dog from an aristocratic family – to stop the looming WMD attack.
The six playable pilots – Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, Peppy Hare, Slippy Toad, Miyu and Fay – must infiltrate enemy installations across the Lylat system, taking down giant bosses and destroying missiles before they can cripple the planet. Along the way they clash with the rival mercenary squad Star Wolf, featuring Wolf O'Donnell, Leon Powalski, Pigma Dengar and Algy, each adding a new layer of danger.
Ultimately the team battles Andross himself, aiming to thwart his all‑out assault and secure Corneria’s survival.
