Summary

Sparkster drops you into a vibrant world where an opossum knight wields a sword that shoots energy bolts and a rocket pack for short bursts of flight. The core platforming feels familiar from the Genesis entries, but the addition of a quick rolling dash gives the action a fresh, snappy feel. Each stage ends with a boss showdown, and the level design throws in a few surprises: a robot‑ostrich auto‑scrolling ride and a top‑down shooter segment that break the usual side‑scroll rhythm.

What really sets this SNES version apart is how the difficulty setting reshapes the ending. On Easy you finish with a duel against Axel Gear, while Normal pushes you into a battle with the Wolf leader, and Hard unlocks an extra, true final stage for those who crave a secret hard mode. Critics at the time praised the game’s crisp graphics, catchy soundtrack, and the way it rewards players who dig deeper into its hidden challenges.

Storyline

The kingdom of Eginasem, a realm populated by opossums, is suddenly besieged by an army of wolf (and yellow dog) soldiers who have also kidnapped Princess Flora. Sparkster, the Rocket Knight, sets out to stop the invasion and rescue the princess.

Adding to the danger, his old rival Axel Gear, another Rocket Knight, has joined the enemy side. Players must fight through waves of soldiers and robots, defeat Axel Gear, and board the enemy battleship where Generalissimo Lioness plans to fire a warhead that would annihilate the planet.
