Summary

Soul Blazer, known in Japan as Soul Blader, lets you play The Master's emissary, crushing monster nests to free trapped souls.
Rescued spirits reincarnate as humans, dolphins or even talking tulips, sparking town rebuilds.
Villagers reward you with items and hints for the next dungeon.

Yukihide Takekawa’s score gives the SNES action an unexpected depth.
The game earned an 85.6% average on GameRankings and EGM’s Editor’s Choice Gold, often likened to A Link to the Past.
IGN placed it #76 on its Top 100 SNES list; Total! put it at #35, lauding graphics and scope.
Quintet reported roughly 295,000 units sold worldwide, about 70,000 in North America.

Fans call it part of the unofficial Gaia Trilogy, but Enix’s U.S. team said it’s a prequel to ActRaiser.
It’s never been re‑released, so original cartridges remain collector treasures.

Storyline

In Soul Blazer, the Master dispatches a heavenly companion, a warrior, to the ruined Freil Empire. The evil spirit Deathtoll has razed villages and locked every creature’s soul inside monster lairs, leaving the world barren. The Hero, a divine avatar wielding a sword and able to speak with any living thing, battles the hordes to free the imprisoned souls. As each lair is cleared, the kingdom slowly repopulates.

The quest leads him through six regions, where he must collect six colored magic stones that open the path to Deathtoll’s stronghold in the World of Evil. He also seeks three sacred artifacts to summon the phoenix’s power for the final showdown. Along the way he falls for Lisa, the daughter of inventor Dr. Leo, whose imprisonment by King Magridd sparked the tragedy. Leo eventually sacrifices himself to end the queen’s bargain with Deathtoll.

After defeating Deathtoll, the Hero is returned to Heaven, but the Master senses his longing for mortal life. A year later the Hero is sent back to the Freil Empire with his memories erased, awakening in Grass Valley where Lisa greets him. Though he cannot recall their past, they set out together, hinting at a fresh start.
