Summary

Sougou Kakutougi: Astral Bout drops you into the gritty world of Fighting Network Rings, a Japanese combat‑sport promotion that foreshadowed modern mixed‑martial‑arts tournaments. The game lets you pick from nine distinct styles—professional wrestling, boxing, karate, sambo, muay thai, kung‑fu, judo, kickboxing and lucha libre—plus a basic martial‑arts set, each tied to a uniquely themed fighter from around the globe.

Your chosen combatant’s health is split into three gauges for arms, legs and torso, so a well‑placed leg kick can cripple a rival just as effectively as a body blow. Matches can end with a ten‑count fall instead of a traditional three‑count pin, and rope breaks add a tactical pause when you’re on the brink. You’ll face opponents like Russia’s sambo specialist Barnov Gainer, Thailand’s Muay Thai ace Somchai Pet Noi, and Mexico’s high‑flying Lucha Libre star Spell Falcon, each bringing authentic moves and even special submission attacks.

Astral Bout offers single‑player, two‑player and sparring modes, but be mindful of the limited continues and the selectable difficulty levels. Rounds range from quick one‑minute bouts to endurance tests, and the game’s stiff kicks—especially those delivered by pro‑wrestling legend Akira Maeda—feel surprisingly weighty for a Super Famicom title. Though Famicom Tsūshin gave it a modest 21 out of 40, the title remains a fascinating early glimpse of MMA on a home console.
