Summary
Equinox, the often‑dubbed Solstice II, drops you into a vivid isometric world that still feels fresh despite its early‑90s roots. The developers wrestled with the quirks of different SNES revisions, re‑working sprite layers and graphics until the colorful backdrops and detailed characters finally clicked into place, and the Mode 7 overworld map adds a smooth, rotating feel that sets the tone for the adventure.
The game rewards curiosity: you’ll wander through 458 rooms across eight dungeons, swapping daggers, swords, axes or maces as needed, while a handful of magical spells—each tied to a specific potion—unlock doors, freeze foes, or even reveal hidden blocks. Collecting blue‑orb tokens summons the boss of each area, and defeating them yields harp strings that double as teleport triggers on the overworld map. The puzzle‑heavy design feels Zelda‑ish, but the spell‑casting mechanic forces you to think beyond simple key‑finding.
Critics praised Equinox’s striking sprite work, its ethereal Tim and Geoff Follin soundtrack, and the depth hidden beneath the isometric lens, even as some noted the perspective could be a bit disorienting. The result is a challenging, atmospheric experience that still feels rewarding for anyone who loves a good brain‑teaser wrapped in retro flair.
Storyline
Solstice II, released in the West as Equinox, follows Glendaal – the son of Shadax, the hero of the original Solstice. An evil witch has kidnapped Shadax, and Glendaal must rescue his father while also freeing Sonia, Shadax’s apprentice, from imprisonment. The game puts you in Glendaal’s boots to explore a massive maze of 458 rooms spread across eight distinct underground realms. These dungeons include Glendaal’s home Galadonia, the forest kingdom Tori, the desert ruins of Deesa, the underwater world Athena, the swampy Quagmire, the sea‑surrounded kingdom Afralona with its towering tomb, the icy Ice Palace, and finally Death Island, Sonia’s resting place. Each area presents its own puzzles and enemies as you work toward the final showdown to free Shadax.
