Summary

Solid Runner is a turn‑based RPG that lets you pilot a combat robot through a gritty, top‑down cityscape. Random encounters pop up as you wander each district, and battles unfold from a third‑person view where you press buttons to issue commands instead of scrolling through menus. When your mech takes damage, you can purchase repair kits at a dedicated warehouse and use them to keep the machine fighting. The game forces you to stick to the proper zones for each mission—straying into unauthorized districts simply isn’t allowed. Dialogue is entirely in Japanese, but the overworld is easy to explore, with plenty of NPCs to chat with as you hunt down criminals. Released only in Japan on March 28 1997, it arrived late in the Super Famicom’s life, making it a rare hidden gem for collectors.

Storyline

Solid Runner drops you into Solid City, a high‑tech metropolis that’s paradoxically swamped with crime. Underground mafias and street gangs dominate the streets, making it a hostile playground for anyone daring enough to challenge them. The city’s sleek neon backdrop masks the constant struggle for control.

You play as Shuu, a hard‑pressed detective in Metal City who also pilots a combat mech that he can barely afford to maintain. He’s engaged to Eileen, the daughter of the Shadow Dragon organization’s leader, and his partner Ion gradually becomes a potential love interest. Together they navigate the city’s underworld while trying to keep their equipment running.

The game weaves a continuous narrative, yet each mission can be tackled on its own, encouraging players to jump in and out of the story as they please.
