Summary

Shodai Nekketsu Kōha Kunio‑kun marks the series' debut on the Super Famicom, bringing the classic Kunio‑Kun beat‑'em‑up action to a home console for the first time. As a Japanese beat‑'em‑up, it captures the fast‑paced brawling that defined the franchise on arcade hardware, now rendered with the SNES’s richer palette and sound.

Because it was the inaugural Kunio‑Kun title on the console, the game set a template for later ports and inspired fans to seek out the series beyond its arcade roots. Its release opened the door for the quirky, school‑yard chaos that would become a hallmark of the brand in the 16‑bit era.

Storyline

In Shodai Nekketsu Kouha Kunio‑kun for the SNES, a group of sophomore students from Nekketsu High School board a student‑only electric train that leaves Tokyo Station and rolls past Kyoto. Led by the titular Kunio, the crew is headed for Osaka, the city famed as a place of laughter and, oddly enough, “defraud.”

Kunio is half‑asleep when a voice crackles over the intercom, jolting him awake. “Kunio! Yoshihiro will guide us through Osaka! Come with us!” the announcement declares. Yoshihiro, an exchange student who hails from Osaka, is introduced as the group’s local guide, and Kunio just learns that they have indeed arrived in the bustling metropolis.
