Summary

Shin Nekketsu Kōha: Kunio‑tachi no Banka (often just called Kunio‑tachi no Banka) is a belt‑scrolling beat‑'em‑up that landed on the Super Famicom as the fourth Kunio‑kun entry for the console, developed by Almanic and published by Technos Japan.

Unlike the series’ usual cartoonish look, this title opts for more realistic character proportions and leans heavily on dialogue between fights, giving it a surprisingly dramatic tone. The game’s structure is completely linear – there are no traditional stages to revisit, and you can’t backtrack once a scene is cleared.

A standout feature is its party system: you can swap between Kunio, Riki, and later their girlfriends Misako and Kyoko at any moment, each with an independent health gauge. If the current character falls, the game ends regardless of the others’ health, and in two‑player mode a defeated partner simply sits out until the scene finishes or they’re knocked out too. Unlimited continues and a passcode let you restart almost anywhere.

Combat mirrors the classic Renegade/Double Dragon feel – punch, kick, jump, block and back‑attack are all on the table. Switching from prison garb to school uniforms unlocks grapples and special moves for the boys, while the female characters have a distinct style: they can’t grab or be grabbed, keeping the fights fresh.

The team behind the game reads like a Technos reunion: producer Noriyuki Tomiyama, director Yoshihisa Kishimoto, lead programmer Michiya Hirasawa (who also handled sound effects), composer Kazunaka Yamane, and writer Hiro Yokokura. The title nods to John Woo’s A Better Tomorrow (Otoko‑tachi no Banka), and a river‑bridge collapse scene was lifted from an unused level in Return of Double Dragon. It would become the final action‑oriented Kunio‑kun title Technos released.

Storyline

Shin Nekketsu Kouha - Kunio-tachi no Banka (often just called Kunio-tachi no Banka) opens with Kunio and his best friend Riki being sentenced to the West Nerima Juvenile Correction Facility for a hit‑and‑run they swear they didn’t commit. The next morning their classmate Hiroshi drops by, warning them of strange happenings at Nekketsu High School and reports that a boy who looks exactly like Kunio has been spotted around town. Convinced they’ve been framed, the duo engineers a daring breakout from the correctional center. Once free, they set out to track down the real culprits and clear their names, with the help of their girlfriends Misako and Kyoko. The story follows their fight to expose the conspiracy and restore their honor.
