Summary

Shin Megami Tensei drops you into a bleak, post‑apocalyptic Tokyo where every hallway is explored from a first‑person view, a design choice that still feels surprisingly immersive on the Super Famicom’s modest hardware. Battles unfold turn‑based, letting you swing swords, fire guns, cast spells, or summon demons you’ve convinced to join you – talk, don’t fight, and they’ll consider your offer. The real trick is the fusion system hidden in the eerie Cathedrals of Shadows, where two or three allied demons can be merged into a tougher companion, but you’ll need magnetite to keep those summoned allies powered. Your moral compass isn’t a simple good‑vs‑evil meter; it’s plotted on both Light‑Neutral‑Dark and Law‑Neutral‑Chaos axes, shaping demon loyalties and even which city districts you can access. Scattered terminals act as save points and teleport hubs, making the sprawling ruins feel navigable. Tsukasa Masuko’s soundtrack underscores the gloom, and the game’s 36/40 Famitsu score reflects how its dark tone and deep recruitment mechanics resonated with players, eventually spawning ports to everything from the PC Engine to modern iOS devices and a dedicated fan translation for the original console version.

Storyline

Shin Megami Tensei (SNES) follows a nameless protagonist living in near‑future Tokyo. A scientist named Steven accidentally opens a portal to the demon realm, which military commander Gotou tries to seize, prompting the United States to order a nuclear strike on the city. The hero receives an e‑mail containing a Devil Summoning Program, uses it to contact demons, and is drawn into the conflict alongside the Law Hero, the Chaos Hero, and a woman called Yuriko.

After the missiles hit, the hero, the two mythic allies, and the Heroine are whisked thirty years into a ruined Tokyo where demons have overrun the world. Two cults now dominate: the Order of Messiah, building a cathedral to usher in a thousand‑year kingdom for Yahweh, and the Ring of Gaia, seeking to summon Lucifer for ultimate freedom. The Law Hero’s soul is reborn as the new Messiah, the Chaos Hero fuses with a demon and departs, and the Heroine is reincarnated to rejoin the party.

The player’s moral choices determine the ending. Aligning with Law leads to a battle against chaos forces and a divine messenger on the cathedral roof; siding with Chaos brings the hero face‑to‑face with Lucifer and a promise of an anarchic era; a neutral path defeats all factions and meets the Taoist deity Taishang Laojun, who urges balance. The Heroine closes the story by declaring that the dead will be reborn and that it is time to rebuild.
