Summary
The Shadow plays like a classic side‑scroll beat ’em up, putting you in the leather‑clad hero’s shoes as you punch through streets, museums, carnivals and labs. Enemies range from street thugs to Mongol warriors, scientists and even sailors, and the game even throws in a gun‑play segment where you can actually shoot.
Your character is tracked by two bars – a standard health meter and a special‑move gauge that fuels invisibility, a lunging dash, or a dome‑shaped force field that knocks everyone inside down.
A standout moment is the motorbike chase, where you race against Mongol riders in a frantic driving stage that feels like a mini‑shoot‑‘em‑up. The SNES version was fully finished and even sent to magazines, but it was pulled from shelves after the film flopped at the box office.
Critics were split: scores ranged from a modest 2/5 in Next Generation to an 80% in Micromanía, with most noting it as a solid but unremarkable title. Today the prototype is available for download, giving retro fans a chance to experience the lost game.
Storyline
The Shadow (Proto) [50A3] on the SNES follows the basic storyline of the 1994 film. In the game, the former criminal turned mystic vigilante patrols the streets of New York City, using his mind‑powers and sweeping cape to fight crime. His greatest challenge arrives in the form of Shiwan Khan, a descendant of Genghis Khan who plots to detonate an atomic bomb and wipe out the metropolis. The narrative builds toward a final confrontation at the secretive Hotel Monolith.
The Shadow’s origin is hinted at through brief cut‑scenes: a mystic captures the ruthless outlaw and teaches him mental abilities, turning him into a nemesis of evil. Armed with his iconic disguise, he must stop Khan’s apocalyptic scheme. Players guide the hero through side‑scrolling levels that echo the movie’s gritty atmosphere. Success means preventing the bomb and defeating Khan in the hidden hotel.
