Summary
When I first stumbled onto Trials of Mana, the most striking thing was its living calendar. Days rush by in minutes, each day of the week is ruled by an elemental spirit, and the magic of that element gets a subtle boost. Night isnât just a visual change â enemies behave differently, a secret black market pops up, and Kevin literally turns into a werewolf, his attacks soaring until dawn. Even the inn lets you fastâforward to evening or the next morning, turning time management into a strategic layer.
The game forces you to pick three out of six heroes, but you decide who starts the adventure. Each character wields a single weapon type and learns spells that scale with their magical affinity. Once you hit levelâŻ18 you can visit a Mana Stone and split the character into a Light or Dark class, reshaping their skill set, and a second split is possible at levelâŻ38 if youâve hunted down the rare item. These class forks never alter the story, but they give the combat a deep, personalized feel.
Combat is driven by the Ring Command, a circular menu that pauses the action while you swap gear, cast spells, or trigger a characterâspecific special attack. The system supports two players sideâbyâside, a nod to its predecessorâs threeâplayer chaos, and the AI handles the third companion when youâre solo.
Behind the pixel art, HirokiâŻKikuta crafted a soundtrack that still feels fresh; he built his own MIDI samples to squeeze every ounce of the Super Famicomâs sound chip. Though the game stayed Japanâonly until a fan translation surfaced in â99, it finally arrived officially on Switch as part of the Collection of Mana, letting a new generation experience its timeless blend of timeâbased strategy and classâdriven RPG depth.
Storyline
Seiken Densetsu 3 (also known as Trials of Mana) opens in a world where Mana, a finite ethereal energy, is fading and the ancient Mana Tree is dying. Long ago the Mana Goddess forged the Sword of Mana, defeated the eight destructive Benevodons and sealed them inside eight Mana Stones before becoming the sleeping Mana Tree herself. In the present, three pairs of heroes each confront a different villainous plot to free the Benevodons: mercenary Duran and iceâprincess Angela versus the Crimson Wizard and the Dragon Lord; thief Hawkeye and windâprincess Riesz against Belladonna and the Dark Majesty; and halfâhuman prince Kevin and halfâelf Charlotte opposing Goremand and the Masked Mage. Each heroâs journey begins with a personal tragedyâDuranâs lost parents, Angelaâs forced spell, Kevinâs friendâs death, Charlotteâs kidnapped caretaker, Hawkeyeâs framed murder, and Rieszâs kidnapped brotherâleading them to the Priest of Light in Wendel and a guiding Faerie from the Sanctuary of Mana. The Faerie chooses the main character as its host, prompting a quest to gather elemental spirits, open the Sanctuaryâs gate, and claim the Mana Sword; the villains then seize the sword, shatter the Mana Stones, and unleash the Benevodons. After battling the released beasts, the heroes confront the empowered main antagonist, who uses the sword and Benevodonsâ power to destroy the Mana Tree, after which the Faerie merges with the treeâs remnants and will be reborn as the Mana Goddess a thousand years later.
