Summary
Secret of Evermore feels like an American twist on the Mana formula, built by Square’s Redmond studio. The team used Square’s SAGE and SIGIL tools, allowing artists to test ideas straight on the SNES. Jeremy Soule’s ambient score, his first game work, adds a moody edge.
You control a boy and his dog, with the AI handling the one you don’t steer. Battles run in real‑time; each attack or sprint drains a gauge that refills for charged strikes. The circular Action Ring swaps weapons, items, or alchemy formulas. Four realms let you wield swords, spears, axes and eventually a bazooka, each upgradable through three skill levels.
Alchemy replaces MP—formulas use paired ingredients you gather, and the dog can sniff out hidden ones on command. Each world trades in its own money, from Prehistoric talons to Omnitopia credits, and some merchants barter goods. The odd economy, real‑time combat, and Soule’s score earned the game a lasting cult following.
Storyline
In Secret of Evermore, a teenage boy and his pet dog stumble into a laboratory hidden in Dr. Sidney Ruffleberg’s mansion. While the dog chews wires, the machine fires a flash that throws them into Evermore.
Evermore is divided into four distinct realms that each echo a different era of human history. Prehistoria is a jungle of dinosaurs and cavemen, Antiqua features pyramids and a colosseum, Gothica is a medieval landscape ruled by dragons, and Omnitopia is a futuristic space‑station. The dog’s form changes with each zone—wolf, greyhound, poodle and a laser‑shooting robot—helping the boy adapt to the challenges.
The boy soon discovers that the realms are the personal utopias of three of Ruffleberg’s former colleagues: Elizabeth, the tribal chief of Prehistoria; Horace Highwater, curator of Antiqua; and Camellia Bluegarden, queen of Gothica. Ruffleberg and his android butler Carltron watch from Omnitopia, but Carltron has been corrupted and is spawning the monsters that plague the lands.
After confronting Carltron’s giant mecha and deactivating him with Ruffleberg’s aid, the monsters vanish and Evermore stabilizes. The boy rescues the three companions, returns them to the real world, and the portal closes, leaving Evermore to exist peacefully.
