Summary
SeaQuest DSV drops you into a split‑screen experience that feels more like a naval command post than a typical side‑scroller. In the isometric overworld you steer the 4600, dock at underwater bases, trade cash for weapons, counter‑measures and extra mini‑subs, and peruse mission briefings while the ocean’s budget ledger tallies every wrecked settlement and rescued creature.
When you dive into a mission the game flips to a scrolling shooter where you can pilot five distinct vehicles: the speedy two‑person Speeder, the omni‑directional Stinger, the heavy‑duty Sea Truck with torpedoes and mines, the excavation‑focused Sea Crab that can dock and drill, and Darwin the dolphin, a nimble mascot that slips through tight gaps but carries no firepower. Each craft handles differently, forcing you to pick the right tool for salvage, rescue, bomb‑defusal or enemy takedown.
THQ teamed up with Amblin’s graphics crew to sprinkle authentic concept art from the TV series into enemy capital ships, and the effort paid off: GamePro praised the intellectual challenge and 3‑D effects, while Nintendo Power highlighted the game in its “Classified Information” spreads. The result is a surprisingly deep underwater strategy wrapped in a retro SNES shell.
Storyline
SeaQuest DSV for the SNES is based on the first season of the TV series. You play as an officer of the United Earth Oceans Organization (UEO) and begin the game inside a training simulation; completing it transfers you to the actual SeaQuest crew where you carry out the same duties.
One early mission sends you to the first ocean quadrant to rescue the crew of an exploration vessel trapped in a caved‑in underwater cave. You must first deploy armed mini‑subs to blast away the debris, then bring in a specialized rescue mini‑sub to extract the personnel.
Most missions blend combat and non‑combat objectives. You’ll battle pirate and eco‑terrorist submarines, while also sealing leaks in an oil tanker wrecked by ecological terrorists. In that scenario you use the mini‑subs for the repair work and the SeaQuest itself to sink every hostile sub lurking near the wreck.
