Summary

SD The Great Battle: Aratanaru Chousen is a quirky blend of top‑down shooting and platforming that first appeared on the Super Famicom at the tail end of 1990. The game’s bright, super‑deformed aesthetic masks a surprisingly tight control scheme, letting players weave through swarms of enemies while hopping between platforms with a fluidity that feels ahead of its time. What makes it stand out is the brief, almost mythic story of its North American incarnation—dubbed simply The Great Battle—promoted for a 1992 launch before being pulled from the shelves, leaving only a handful of promotional flyers as proof of its intended overseas life. That cancelled release has turned the title into a collector’s curiosity, a hidden gem that still sparks conversation among retro enthusiasts today.
