Summary
Samurai Shodown (Samurai Spirits in Japan) feels like stepping onto a painted scroll of late‑1780s Japan, where every combatant wields a blade instead of fists. The SNES port keeps the full roster, but the camera pulls back, shrinking the sprites and giving the arena a slightly wider feel than the arcade. Traditional shakuhachi and shamisen tones drift through each match, while the game’s signature slow‑motion bursts highlight a single, crushing strike rather than endless combos.
A quirky delivery man wanders the background, tossing bombs or a health‑restoring chicken that can swing the tide of a bout. Instead of blood, the SNES version swaps crimson splatter for a spray of sweat, and a referee lifts a white or red flag to signal who landed the decisive hit. The announcer calls each fighter’s name before the clash and again after victory, preserving the arcade’s dramatic flair.
Beyond the core fights, the console adds a “count‑down” mode and lets you unlock the final boss for two‑player duels with a secret code. Dolby Surround rounds out the experience, and the arcade intro sequence appears—minus the original voiceover—while the post‑victory character artwork and endings remain intact.
Storyline
Samurai Spirits (known in the West as Samurai Shodown) pits players against the resurrected warlord Shiro Tokisada Amakusa. After being slain in 1638, Amakusa makes a pact with the dark god Ambrosia, returns in 1787 as an akuma, and uses the Palenke stone to unleash chaos across Japan in 1788. The evil Ambrosia seeks to shroud the world in darkness, and Amakusa spreads the darkness as his servant.
Twelve distinct fighters answer the call, each driven by personal motives. Haohmaru roams in search of worthy opponents, Nakoruru protects nature with her eagle Mamahaha, and Ukyo Tachibana fights for a flower for his beloved. Charlotte Christine defends France, Galford Weller trains as a ninja with his dog Poppy, Jubei Yagyu guards Japan, and Earthquake, a Texan thief, hunts treasure. Hanzo Hattori rescues his son, Kyoshiro Senryo hones his kabuki art, Tam Tam retrieves the stolen Palenke stone, Wan‑Fu seeks strong allies for the Qing, and Genan Shiranui pursues a path of evil.
Non‑playable characters include Kuroko, the masked judge who oversees each duel, and Hikyaku, a delivery man serving Amakusa who disrupts fights. Players must choose among the twelve (plus three hidden) warriors to defeat Amakusa and halt Ambrosia’s darkness.
