Summary
Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire drops you into ancient China’s turbulent warlords, where you must out‑maneuver rival rulers, seize their cities and expand your own empire. The turn‑based engine feels familiar yet fresh, thanks to upgraded graphics and new tactical tools: warships can ignite enemy vessels, archers launch flaming arrows, catapults batter fortifications, and you can even summon roaming barbarians to raid foes. Alliances are fleeting, allowing you to forge and break pacts on the fly, while a separate power‑up kit for the PC’s Chinese and Japanese releases adds deeper character customization and three bonus scenarios. The SNES version earned praise for its visual polish and “subtle, relaxing” soundtrack, with GamePro calling its multilayered menu the most approachable in the series. Next Generation noted the game’s beauty and depth, even if it felt like a continuation of familiar formulae.
Storyline
Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire (often shortened to Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV) guides players through six distinct historical scenarios. The story begins with Dong Zhuo seizing Luoyang in AD 189, then moves to the Flying General’s campaigns across the Central Plains in AD 194. It follows Liu Bei’s desperate search for refuge in Xinye in AD 201, the dramatic clash at Red Cliffs in AD 208, the collapse of the Han Dynasty and the rise of the Three Kingdoms in AD 221, and finally the fateful events at Wuzhang Plains in AD 235.
The Power‑up Kit version expands the narrative with three additional chapters: the villain’s usurpation of the Han throne and the quest for unification in AD 189, a three‑hero power struggle in war‑torn China in AD 190, and the emergence of a barbarian king in AD 225. These extra scenarios deepen the epic sweep of the game’s storyline.
