Summary
Romance of the Three Kingdoms III: Dragon of Destiny (known in Japan as Sangokushi III) landed on the SNES alongside its PC and Genesis siblings, and it’s the only SNES title that ever received a full Chinese translation.
The game drops you into ancient China with six distinct scenarios that reshape the power balance before you even pick a warlord. You can control one or more leaders, sprinkle in custom characters on empty provinces, and then juggle a roster of hundreds of personalities, each tracked by stats like War Ability, Intelligence, Politics, Charisma, Army Command and Naval Command.
With 46 cities to capture, the ultimate goal is simple: own every dot on the map. The SNES version earned a mixed but respectable spread of Famitsu scores—7/10, 7/10, 6/10 and 5/10—showing that its deep strategy resonated even if the polish varied.
Storyline
Romance of the Three Kingdoms III – Dragon of Destiny drops you into ancient China, a land ruled by a single emperor while rival warlords vie for the throne. You start with a single territory and must expand your control to become the ultimate ruler.
The game’s story is divided into six scenarios that loosely follow the novel’s timeline: Dong Zhuo’s reign of terror in AD 189, the warlords’ power struggle in AD 194, Liu Bei seeking shelter in Xinye in AD 201, the emergence of the Crouching Dragon in AD 208, the rise of the Three Kingdoms in AD 221, and finally Jiang Wei inheriting Kongming’s legacy in AD 235.
Each scenario sketches the shifting allegiances and territories of the era, but the gameplay itself focuses on strategic conquest rather than strict narrative reenactment. Your objective is simple: conquer enough lands to claim the imperial throne.
