Summary
Rockman & Forte (known overseas as Mega Man & Bass) feels like a love‑letter to the classic 16‑bit action formula while daring to push it in new directions. The game lets you pick either hero at the start and stick with that choice for the whole run, which instantly splits the experience: Mega Man can charge shots, slide, and call on Rush for digging, whereas Forte (Bass) fires in eight directions, double‑jumps, dashes, and can even combine with his wolf Treble for brief flight. Stage selection is deliberately tight – after the opening level you only ever face three Robot Masters at a time, and clearing one unlocks a security room where you blast a series of crystals with the weapons you’ve just earned. This gate‑keeping leads to a fortress crawl that feels more methodical than the usual pick‑any‑order approach, and the hidden bolt‑rich security cavern rewards careful exploration. Scattered throughout the levels are 100 data CDs that flesh out series lore; many are tucked behind obstacles that only one character’s abilities can reach, encouraging multiple playthroughs. Visually, the title recycles the polished sprites and animations from Mega Man 8, but adds six brand‑new bosses designed by Ariga, Iwamoto, and Izuki, each with distinct personalities. The soundtrack, split among Akari Kaida, Naoshi Mizuta, and Toshihiko Horiyama, was cranked out in under a week per composer, giving the game a punchy, retro‑metal vibe. Developed as a “hardcore” yet accessible entry for younger Super Famicom owners, the game’s steep difficulty and deep item system earned praise for its graphics and classic feel, even if it remained Japan‑only until the later GBA port.
Storyline
One year after the events of Mega Man 8, a new robot villain called Robot King breaks into Dr. Wily’s laboratory and then the Robot Museum to steal the data blueprints for Dr. Light’s creations. Dr. Light alerts Mega Man, while Bass hears the news and decides to prove he is the stronger robot. Proto Man arrives first; King declares he wants a robot‑ruled utopia and invites Proto Man to join him. Proto Man refuses, is sliced in half, and teleports back to the lab for repairs as King escapes with the stolen data.
Mega Man and Bass each defeat eight powerful robots loyal to King and infiltrate his castle. During the final battle, Proto Man interrupts, destroys King’s shield, and lets Mega Man and Bass finish him off. King questions why they fight for humans, and Dr. Wily appears on a monitor, boosting King’s brainwashing level for a second showdown. After defeating King again, the castle self‑destructs and the heroes escape.
The duo confronts Dr. Wily in his restored lab. Wily reveals he created King to test Bass and shows plans for a newer King to partner with Bass, but Proto Man destroys the plans. Wily orders Bass to kill Proto Man; Bass hesitates, and Proto Man warns he can never truly defeat his rival. Bass dismisses him, vowing to still destroy Mega Man. Mega Man returns home saddened, but Roll gives him a letter from the escaped King, who seeks atonement and hopes for friendship in the future.
