Summary
Robotrek is a quirky, comedy‑RPG for the SNES that lets you play as the son of a famous inventor rather than the fighter itself. I love how the game revolves around an invention machine: you collect "Scrap" items and mash them together to forge weapons, armor and even whole robots. You can build up to three bots, customize their color, equip them, and program special attacks with a simple macro system—making every combat unit feel like a personal creation. The battle system uses a stripped‑down ATB gauge, letting a single robot take on three foes, and you can swap bots mid‑turn at the cost of a move, a mechanic that predates Pokémon’s creature swapping by a couple of years. The music, credited to Ayako Yoda with Yuzo Koshiro as sound producer, is decidedly hyper‑cute, while the sprite work leans cartoon‑ish, which divided reviewers at the time. Despite its innovative crafting and robot‑raising, Robotrek sold only about 65,000 copies worldwide, largely due to weak advertising and a crowded SNES market. Still, its blend of humor, item invention and robot customization marks it as a memorable off‑beat gem among Quintet’s library.
Storyline
Robotrek takes place on the peaceful planet Quintenix (called Paradise Star in Japan). You play as the unnamed son of world‑famous inventor Dr. Akihabara, who has just moved to the coastal town of Rococo. The town’s calm is shattered when a band of pirates known as the Hackers, led by Blackmore, launch an uprising.
The Hackers are after Dr. Akihabara because of a mysterious stone called the Tetron. The Tetron was originally created by the protagonist’s ancestor Rask (Rusk) and his friend Gateau, who later founded the Hackers to exploit its time‑bending power. Gateau hides the stone’s fragments across Quintenix, planning to use them for universal domination.
Your task is to travel the world, repair robots, collect the Tetron shards, and thwart Gateau’s space‑fortress scheme before he can rewrite history. Along the way you rebuild the Invention Machine in your father’s basement and prove yourself the planet’s greatest inventor.
