Summary

Radical Dreamers, the quirky side‑story to Chrono Trigger, lives on the now‑defunct Satellaview service for the Super Famicom. Instead of flashy sprites, the game leans on dim, static backdrops and a strong narrative voice that guides you through Serge’s adventure with Kid and the masked magician Gil. Choices appear as word‑based prompts, and the combat system even lets you type absurd commands like “Run my knife into the goblin’s chest!”—all while an invisible timer forces you to act quickly or suffer damage. Your health and Kid’s affection are hidden meters that subtly shape the climax, and the title boasts a New Game+ that unlocks six extra, often tongue‑in‑cheek scenarios after you finish one of the three main endings. Yasunori Mitsuda’s atmospheric score, the same mind behind Chrono Trigger’s music, adds a haunting layer to the minimal visuals. Though never released on cartridge, a fan translation by Demiforce appeared in 2003, with the polished 1.4 version dropping on Christmas 2005 to fix lingering bugs.

Storyline

Radical Dreamers follows three young thieves—Kid, Serge and the masked magician Magil—as they infiltrate the ominous Viper Manor on a moonlit night. Kid, a sixteen‑year‑old professional thief with a Robin‑hood streak, leads the crew in search of the mythic Frozen Flame, an artifact said to grant any wish and linked to the ancient extraterrestrial Lavos. Serge, a drifting musician who met Kid three years earlier, provides a carefree narration, while Magil, a blue‑haired, shadow‑fading enigma, supplies magical support and later reveals himself as Magus, the brother of Zeal’s lost princess Schala.

The trio battles goblins and uncovers the manor’s dark history, learning that Lord Lynx, the manor’s cruel aristocrat, seized power after destroying the Acacia Dragoons. Deep beneath the estate lies an underground ruin of the airborne Kingdom of Zeal, where the Frozen Flame rests. Kid’s personal vendetta stems from Lynx’s murder of her caretaker Lucca, and the confrontation culminates in Lynx trapping Magil and attempting to combine the Frozen Flame with a Time Egg (the Chrono Trigger) to control time. The Trigger shatters, triggering a temporal distortion that reveals Kid’s true identity as Princess Schala, while Magil’s true nature as Magus is confirmed.

After Lynx retreats, an army from Porre storms the manor, forcing the thieves to flee. Kid acknowledges her newfound heritage as a treasure beyond theft and parts ways with Serge, disappearing with Magil. The game also offers several alternate scenarios—ranging from comedic love stories to space‑cop showdowns—each delivering a different ending to the core narrative.
