Summary
Project Base 0.8.1 feels like a lovingly tuned version of the classic Metroid formula. The ROM hack smooths out the original’s movement quirks, adds fresh level layouts, and sprinkles in new graphic touches that keep the retro vibe alive while feeling a bit more polished. All the custom code runs cleanly on a wide range of SNES hardware – from emulators like Snes9x and higan/BSNES to real repro carts, SD2SNES adapters, and even the SNES Classic Mini. What’s striking is that the difficulty stays true to Super Metroid’s spirit; you can finish the game without resorting to glitches or wall‑jumps, making it approachable for newcomers yet satisfying for veterans. The current build is marked as stable and fully playable, offering a seamless experience for anyone looking to revisit the 2‑D adventure on modern or vintage SNES setups.
Storyline
In Project Base 0.8.1, Samus Aran dives into the shadowy depths of Planet Zebes to stop a fresh wave of Space Pirates and a mysterious new Metroid faction. The mission centers on rescuing a long‑surviving Metroid hatchling before its volatile energy falls into the wrong hands. As you navigate Zebes’ twisted corridors, you’ll clash with iconic foes such as Ridley, the towering lizard Kraid, and the ever‑looming Mother Brain, who has ominously returned. Samus can unleash a powerful somersault attack and swing along electric beams to traverse narrow passages and dispatch enemies. Every turn reveals more of the planet’s covert underworld, keeping the action relentless and the stakes high.
