Summary

In Powermonger you step into a world where no king rules and power itself becomes the law. You can bring territories together with diplomacy or crush them with your sword, but every decision is felt by a living population of farmers, shepherds, merchants, thieves and more.

The map is rendered in three dimensions, though you can only rotate it in 90‑degree steps and zoom through eight preset levels. While the terrain rises and falls, the people, trees and buildings are flat sprites that move around on their own thanks to an early artificial‑life engine. A handy query tool lets you inspect any individual’s name, age, allegiance and equipment, giving the game a surprisingly personal feel.

Seasons aren’t just cosmetic – they change the climate and affect movement speed. Deforestation can trigger extra rain or snow, and you must stockpile food for winter or watch your soldiers starve. Food is the single most critical resource; you can harvest it from farms, slaughter wandering sheep, barter with neutral towns, or pillage an enemy captain’s stores.

Your forces are organized around captains, each commanding an army that obeys with a slight delay that grows the farther they are from your main character. Keeping captains alive is vital, because a dead captain dissolves his army back into the towns. The balance of power is displayed as a scale beneath the mini‑map, and you win by tipping it completely in your favor.

Equipment is produced in towns and can be “invented” by ordering an army to work on it. Weapons are automatically distributed, with the captain shouldering any surplus – though a heavily laden captain moves sluggishly. In 1991 the game received a World War I expansion that swapped medieval swords for rifles and artillery, and several other themed expansions were planned but never released.
